The Chiricahua National Monument in southeastern Arizona is an area of unique formations
where the last stronghold of the Chiricahua Apache indians and the famous Geronimo.

The rock formations were formed from the Turkey Creek Caldera eruption 27 million 
years ago.  The area was blanketed with 2000 feet of ash and pumice which eventually
hardened into rhyolite tuffs which eroded into the columns we see today.

The Chiricahua National Monument became official in 1924 and is listed on
the National Register of Historic Places.
